  Doubling Bet In Blackjack Question

  Save

Please comment on the pros and cons of this blackjack system:

Start by betting $100.00. If you win, set aside the $100.00 winnings.

Again bet $100.00. If you lose, keep doubling your bet until you win again which will once again make you even with the house except for the money you put aside as winnings.

Then once again bet $100.00 and so forth.

As far as I can tell, as long as you have a big enough bankroll to keep doubling your bets until you win, you should be alright.

Is this a sure bet system or is there something I’m missing.

You would have to lose quite a few hands in a row for the max bet situation to arise.

I lost 8 hands in a row last trip. So would i feel comfortable laying out $12800 on that 8th hand? Nope. Even if the table max allowed it.

Las Vegas is built on dreams – go for it. I’m sure the casinos have never seen someone as smart as you.

Oh, wait – somebody did think of it in the 18th century and wrote a wiki page on it. Enjoy.

All correct replies so far. You run up against the table maximum. It could get really get ugly. Even skilled players will sometimes lose more than ten hands in a row or more. The Martingale is dangerous

It is a horrible system for Blackjack. If you double your bet you get to that table limit alot faster than you think you will – and it is not that unusual to real off a string of 7 or 8 losing hands – which totally destroys you in that system.

But the biggest reason it doesn’t work in blackjack is because it does not account for situations where you need to double or split your bet based on your hand. Knowing when to double and split and doing so appropriately is the key to winning at blackjack.

If you want to play a Martingale betting strategy it is much easier with red/black bets at roulette – or at a baccarat table. But ultimately no betting system changes the house edge in the long run.

  Great responses, all!

Shagger, did you do the math that Oxygen8r alluded to? Did you see how quickly you will reach the table maximum, and how quickly your bankroll will give out? Just FYI, when you put up that 8th bet, after having lost 7 in a row, you have already lost $12,700, and your 8th bet will be in the amount of $12,800. This means that if your bankroll was “only” $25,500, you are now all in.

Sorry, I forgot, the hypothetical was that you had won $100 before this string of losses. So you’d still have $100, after your 8th loss in a row.

I have personally lost more than 8 hands in a row. Many times. Of course, I have won more than 8 hands in a row as well.

I suggest that instead of Martingale, you do a much more conservative game. If you are betting $100 and you win, increase the bet to $125. If you win, increase it another $25. If you keep on winning, once you get to $200, push your increase up to $100 per round. This way, as you win, you are banking some, rather than increasing the bets too precipitously. When you lose, cut back down to the base bet, in this case, $100, and when you get on another winning streak, push it up again conservatively.

Husker, great point about doubling and splitting. Martingale doesn’t really account for those additional bets.
